Climate Change and Food: Challenges for the Future

Agricultural and food activities today exert a range of wide-spread, multifaceted impacts on the climate and environment, producing an estimated 10% to 12% of human-generated green-house gases. Series of disasters include long-term drought, heavy machinery destroying niche wildlife habitats, and rivers and aquifers depleted. Food and agriculture issues have arisen as humanity faces the existential ethical challenge of ensuring that the seven billion-and-rising people of planet Earth have access to nourishing food while at the same time reducing agriculture’s adverse impacts on the climate and the environment.

The Department of Bio-Industry Communication and Development of National Taiwan University organizes a conference, APSafe in collaboration with European Society for Agricultural and Food Ethics (EurSafe). This conference is intended to get together people with a common interest to and exchange the most cutting-edge ideas. The theme of this year’s conference is “Climate Change and Food: Challenges for the Future.” We wish to explore the multi-challenge of “food ethics”. How can we do to ensure that food production is enough and more fairly distributed in the coming decades while at the same time making sure that this food production is done in more sustainable and environmentally friendly ways? When the farmers and other food producers perceive the changes as infringing on their right of choice and affecting their bottom line, how can we persuade them to change their practices? We who work in agriculture, need to rally the experts to the cause, offer guidance, and bring the stakeholders to the table.

We wish that during this interdisciplinary conference including humanities and social science, natural science, and agriculture and food science, we view and concern agricultural and food ethic issues, and all of these ethical issues and concerns would promise to offer needed counsel for cleaner and more climate-friendly approaches to farming and food production.

We invite submissions of abstracts relating to the following aspects of agricultural and food ethics:
1. Crop production in climate change and ethics
2. Animal production in climate change and ethics
3. Planning and land ethics
4. Consumer and food safety
5. Food and agricultural education
6. Food sovereignty and fairness
7. Gender and food
8. Indigenous peoples' food sovereignty
9. Ethics and genetically modified food
10. Ethnic groups and food cultures
11. Other
